I built the simplest fat loss diet possible. Buffet-style meals, no calorie tracking, no strict portions. Instead of relying on willpower to lose fat, this “best diet for fat loss” is designed to change the conditions that make overeating easy — using fat loss science and ingredients proven to reduce hunger, cravings, and mindless eating. And even if you never follow this diet exactly, I’ll show you how using just one part of it can make achieving a calorie deficit and, in turn, fat loss dramatically easier.

Meet Max. A personal trainer and train conductor. According to his DEXA scan, he started at 19% body fat. And our female subject, Isabel, is a Lagree coach. Her starting body fat is 31%.

Isabel: “I think just with the tracking to lose fat is something that I kind of struggle with mostly with having a busier schedule…”

Max: “Usually… I hit up a buffet… maybe like 2-3 times a week… yea I just love eating.” But he’d eat until he was sick. It’s a habit he wanted to break.

Luckily, if my science checks out, then this fat loss diet won’t just help them lose fat with unlimited food and without counting a single calorie — it should also reset their brain to eliminate hunger, cravings, and unhealthy food habits.

I call it the CPB Diet. It’s simple, just three rules:

1) Chicken breast, potatoes, broccoli, and carrots. Eat as much as you want.
2) Olive oil: limited to one tablespoon per meal.
3) No liquid calories, diet sodas, or artificial sweeteners.

The point of this is to keep it really bland. You’re going to get seasoning, you’re going to get sugar-free sauces, so you do have some flexibility there.

Week 1 of being on this “best diet for fat loss” was rough:
Max: “I would want sushi and then images of potato would just keep popping up … it was just mentally exhausting.”
Isabel: “Chicken for breakfast… it just makes me feel very trapped.”

But the crazy part is that neither of them complained about being hungry despite being in a calorie deficit. They actually struggled to eat enough.

Based on their weight trends, we estimated their intake (without tracking):
Max: ~1800 calories/day
Isabel: ~1300 calories/day

And after 1 week, their measurements were already wild:
Max: “It’s down over 3 centimeters.”
Isabel: “Down 1.5 centimeters on the waist.”

Now there’s some pretty crazy fat loss science behind Max’s favorite food: potatoes.

Back in 1995, researchers compared 38 foods for fullness. Potatoes came out on top — but preparation matters. Fry them, and that advantage mostly disappears, which is why we limited each meal to just 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

By week 2, the hardest part on this fat loss diet wasn’t even hunger — it was FOMO:
“I’ve been feeling a lot of FOMO… potlucks… bakery… family lunch…”

We also tested flexibility (special ingredients for Isabel — orange, tomato, avocado, Greek yogurt, and bok choy for micronutrients — and a planned hedonic deviation/treat meal):
Isabel: “I definitely thought it would spike more cravings… but honestly, I feel totally fine… easy to get back into routine.”

Max stayed strict, but that created a different problem: micronutrients.

So I told him: “Here are the big ones that you’re not getting enough… it would be a good idea to start supplementing these.”

Isabel had one challenge Max couldn’t relate to in her journey to lose fat — her menstrual cycle.

During this time, hunger and cravings can ramp up, making consistency harder. You’ll often hear that women need to completely change their diet or workouts around this time, but there’s actually no strong evidence supporting major changes.

Instead, the research suggests keeping the overall structure the same and listening to your body.

For Isabel, that meant making small adjustments without breaking the plan: more meal volume (more potatoes) and simple comforts like tea or gum.

And then came the final scans. Where Isabel went from 31% body fat to 28%, and Max went from 19.3% down to 12.9%!

Now, even though they’ve seen fast results, the goal of this experiment isn’t to have them eat this extreme fat loss diet forever. It’s to reset how their brain responds to food, then gradually move toward a more flexible approach they can actually stick to long term.

Plus, even applying a few aspects of this experiment can make fat loss much easier:

– Eat a solid protein source at every meal
– Choose more filling carbs like potatoes and fruit instead of rice or bread
– Fill at least half your plate with vegetables
– Be mindful with fats — oils, nuts, avocado add up fast
– Keep most of your meals simple and repetitive
– Avoid changing up your meals every single day

  1. This was honestly one of the wildest 30-day transformations I’ve ever seen. DXA scans aren’t perfect, but the visual change speaks for itself. A few important things:

    1. This is NOT meant to be a long term, sustainable diet. It's a short term reset, that I'd recommend running 30 days max (at least for the strict protocol Max did). I’m actually planning to run the "strict" version myself during my next diet. I’ve always relied on calorie counting, so I’m really interested to see how my body responds to this instead.

    2. If you’re curious about trying this approach yourself, please don’t attempt this diet blindly. It’s very restrictive if done wrong. That’s why we put together two free 30-day guides (CPB Strict + CPB Flex) that walk you through exactly what to eat each week and what to do after the 30 days are up. You can get them free to keep by starting a 2-week trial of our Built With Science+ training & nutrition app here: https://bws.plus/9a .

    3. IF YOU ARE AN EXISTING BWS+ APP MEMBER, you can access your 30-Day Boring Diet guides by logging into your BWS+ web portal here:
https://web.builtwithscience.com/ . We'll also send an email out with them included!

Plus, if you download the guides and opt-in to our experiment, we’ll also use anonymous weight-trend data to compare how this diet stacks up against traditional calorie counting — so you’re not just following it, you’re helping us scientifically test it. Let me know how it goes!!

  2. Honestly I’ve been on a diet similar to this but rice and chicken, beef, fish , eggs the food is very boring. It takes the joy of enjoyment out of eating. It’s just something I have to do to fuel my body. But it does work it just has to be something that you have to make a conscious decision to eat the correct foods and macros. When he said there would be no point in going and watching them eat hit hard I actually did this we went out with family to eat and I sat there and watched them eat foods I chose not to eat.

  3. You can come up with whatever the latest BS fad there is for eating (sardines for a month, ROFL)! However, it won't amount to a hill of beans if you don't exercise-properly! Exercise is the main driver for your fat loss, not the ever changing, trendy crap you see going on every damn day.

  4. That is not the way to eat Carrots and Broccoli. Cut the carrot long and thin jullianne style, Brocolli chopped into smaller pieces; add mushrooms, sauté them in butter and garlic and a little salt. Cover with a round lid for a few mins. Drizzle the same butter and garlic to the mashed boiled potato, and you have perfection 🤌to go with the chicken.

  5. 9:34 why is this so hard to just say?? Womens periods affect her weight. Imagine going through it. It would have been better to know what week she was on for her results if she was comfortable with that. This experiment wasn't done very well even for a 20 minute yt video. Are men scared of womens issues???

  6. During weight loss, the body may lose not only fat and muscle but also significant amounts of water—especially due to extreme, short-term diets—a point my father, a doctor, always emphasized. It is not merely a matter of protein and fat; water, minerals, trace elements (such as zinc, calcium, magnesium, selenium, etc.), vitamins, and other essential nutrients are also involved. Therefore, rely on natural foods as much as possible and avoid processed or synthetic products—particularly those high in fat, sugar, or salt (such as chips, soft drinks, instant noodles, sauces, chocolate, and cakes).

  7. Chicken is definitely difficult to cook and you have to perfect your method so you can enjoy it. If I would doing this diet I would steam the broccoli and carrots then roast them, the potatoes I would boil then roast, and the chicken I would tenderize in olive oil (salt and pepper) and grill stove top.

  8. That is not enough lipids, your skin will crack and your liver fail.
Potatoes are carbs so you're not even cutting that down…
No serious MD would support that.
Variety is essential to avoid concentration of pesticids and heavy metals, etc.

  9. I’m glad i found this channel on the right time ( now I am reading “ultra processed people Book) Yes I am ready and I love simplereal food diet. I might have hated this food if I wasn’t ready.

  10. My 2 secret fat loss weapons at age 74.
    #1. Chili Salads
(Homemade meat & beans chili poured over baked potatoes, cabbage & carrots
#2. Working all day in my gardens, digging, pushing, pulling, lifting, chopping, sawing, mowing, climbing, etc.. I Went from a 35% body fat to 10%+- body fat and have maintained it for over 20 years.

  11. I would be surprised if sweet potatoes could not be included; the carb content is comparable to potatoes. Sweet potatoes have the benefit that they don't require fats to be tasty. Whole, skin on, oven roasted(two stage: ~80m@325F, 10m@450F), then peeled sweet potatoes are perfectly tasty without any seasoning or fats. Been messing around with the diet for a week and adding in a sweet potato with regular potatoes goes very well. If a small amount of fat were to be allowed, I think it reasonable to swap a chicken breast for a thigh instead so long as no other fats are added. I also mixed in some carrot as it brings a lot of flavor and does not need seasoning; steamed, then finish roasted at high temp for some caramelization.
Only downside of sweet potatoes is the split opinion on the taste and texture; bit of a love or hate vegetable.
