Doctor Mike on Diets: Ketogenic Diet | Diet Review

Hey guys! I am back with the next installment of my diet review series. This week I am covering the incredibly popular ketogenic diet. Within the last year or two, the keto diet has soared in popularity and I can understand why. It is a simple diet where counting calories isn’t important (who wants to count calories) and you get to eat a bunch of really delicious foods.

If you are curious, the name of the diet comes from the ketone bodies produced within your body as a result of switching your body to fuel itself through fats instead of carbs. This is also referred to as a state of ketosis.

I know many of you want to lose weight and there are tons of videos on weight loss out there. But I want to give you an honest doctor’s take on the keto diet, which is essentially a high fat low carb diet. Its claim to fame is that helps to burn body fat for energy, therefore helping you lose weight quickly. But is fast weight loss even healthy? + Is this the best weight loss diet?

Anyway, I could go into more detail covering the smallest intricacies of the diet but I did not want to weigh down the video, both literally and figuratively. Please let me know if this is too little, too much, or just the right amount of information about intermittent fasting.

Also, I want you to remember that diets are not all about weight loss but more importantly about eating healthy. So let’s get started with the Keto diet explained / Ketogenic diet explained diet review!

I sincerely hope you enjoy, and definitely let me know if you want more videos like this by giving it a like and a share.

  1. Love this! Very educational and would love more diet review videos. It’ll help keep everyone informed and debunk a lot of those myths. Safe to say I will probably never do the keto diet, I love pasta too much 😂😋

  2. Keto has been great for my hormone imbalance, so many of my PCOS symptoms are alleviated from this way of eating. I agree it’s not for everybody or even most, but for hormone regulation it can be life changing.

  3. I am not against this but for those with higher metabolism like me Yeah i eat everything carbs meat and dairy grains the Indian maharashtrian eat all nutrients diet but i still am not gaining weight and yeah i do the similar quintity what twice my size dude my roommate eats 😂 i mean everything has different metabolism and bodies so you want to talk about that when discussing diets aswell

  4. I’m an adult with epilepsy. Keto isn’t just for kids anymore! It has reduced my seizures by over 50% and the improvement happened in about a week. Since I know that my overall quality of life depends on it, there are no “cheat days.” Ever.

  5. Would you look at new trend about people saying science your blood type is your diet but says you got parasites and fungas etc… but like literally the person I know personally quit drinking 2 years now but now promoting blood analysis to determine but not from a doctor or regular blood analysis places

  6. It's not by bag at all, and never was my bag to be into special diets of any kind, especially food group restricting diets, not even when I needed to drop some weigh a few years ago, but I keep hearing about Keto and Ketosis every day from this quite obese guy who's intending to lose serious weight. Fact is I see it as a fad diet and greatly flawed, and with all the "ketosis" hype, it just sounds like junk science nutrition. Also, whenever I try to find out from MD commentaries, some critical opinion on it, every last one of the MDs or PHDs who discuss it are on my list for lacking credibility, either being Vegetarian nuts, Keto nuts or Carnivore nuts. So, there's a vacuum for me on the critical thinking about it.

  7. The keto diet for epilepsy is much different than what people "think" is a ketogenic diet. You have to add fat to all of your foods, like butter or olive oil. Stay away from "keto" products; chances are they aren't keto. Many keto breads contain modified wheat starch, which will lower ketones. Any other medications that raise glucose also lower ketones. You need to actually be measuring your ketones. They need to be a lot higher (than mainstream keto) for therapeutic purposes. Traditional keto for epilepsy is 4:1, meaning 4 parts fat for every 1 part of protein+ carb combined. You need to portion and weigh everything. There are other variations such as 3:1 to allow more protein, and modified atkins which ranges from 1:1- 2:1, and don't require fasting.

  8. I’ve been keto now for over four years and I find it very easy to maintain and the food is delicious. My cholesterol numbers are perfect but even more importantly, no more dangerously high triglycerides. The only fault I’ve found so far with keto is the sad fact that I didn’t find out about it years sooner than I did. Keto is so easy for me to stick with and I will not allow anything or any so called special occasion to derail me. My health is way too important to me.

  10. Started this diet weighing 372lbs 2 months in and I'm down to 339lbs. I also doing one or two 24hr fasting every week. Started lifting weights and exercising. I haven't felt this good in a long time.

  11. @DoctorMike I am an early highschool student what diet should I use to get fit? I'm a 13y male. My diet consists of alot of starch, carbs, salad, and fish/beef

  12. I’d love to see an updated version of this video, as some of the points you made weren’t fully developed. For instance, at 2:42 you mention that weight loss occurs because fats become the primary energy source and the body burns stored fat. However, that explanation is incomplete. The real reason people tend to lose fat on a keto diet is more nuanced.

Your second point actually gets closer to the truth: fats and proteins are more satiating, which often leads to reduced overall calorie intake. Additionally, protein has a thermogenic effect, meaning the body uses more energy to digest it, which contributes to weight loss.

I recommend checking out videos by Jeff Nippard and Mike Israetel for a more evidence-based breakdown. They emphasize that while the keto diet can be effective for fat loss, it’s not simply because carbs are eliminated. Rather, it’s because cutting carbs tends to reduce the intake of high-calorie junk foods—many of which are carb-heavy snacks. This naturally leads to lower overall calorie consumption.

Ultimately, weight loss comes down to thermodynamics—calories in versus calories out. A calorie deficit is the driving force behind fat loss, regardless of the diet approach.

  13. All these people losing weight. If I lost as much as everyone who comments I literally wouldn't exist. If you're that fat, Any diet is going to yield results. I want to see studies on how this diet affects healthy people who are active and lean and with below average health risks.

  14. 🤣😂 I quit watching this video when you said "bad ldl"! At least you understand there is ZERO requirement for carbohydrates in human nutrition.
