FV WT Wall Crunch M0336

Wall Crunches are an exceptional core exercise that modifies the traditional floor crunch by utilizing a wall to lock your lower body into place.
By placing your feet flat against the wall, you automatically flatten your lumbar spine (lower back) against the floor. This eliminates momentum, protects your lower back from straining, and forces your rectus abdominis (six-pack muscles) to do 100% of the lifting.

How to Perform Wall Crunches with Perfect Form

1. The Setup: Lie flat on your back facing a wall. Lift your legs and place your feet flat against the wall so your knees and hips both form 90-degree angles (your calves will be parallel to the floor).
2. Hand Placement: Place your fingertips lightly behind your ears or cross your arms over your chest. Do not lace your fingers behind your head to avoid pulling on your neck.
3. The Crunch: Take a deep breath in. As you exhale, contract your stomach muscles to lift your head, neck, and shoulder blades smoothly off the mat. Think about driving your ribs down toward your hips.
4. The Top Position: Pause at the peak of the movement for one second, keeping your chin tucked slightly as if holding a tennis ball under it.
5. The Return: Inhale as you slowly and with control lower your shoulders and head back down to the floor. Do not just drop down.

Key Variations to Change the Target

To target different parts of your core, you can adjust your leg positioning against the wall:

Variation Name Leg Position Primary Target Muscle
Standard Wall Crunch Knees bent at 90 degrees, feet flat on the wall [0] Upper Abs (Rectus Abdominis) [0]
Straight-Leg Wall Crunch Legs completely straight up, heels resting against the wall Lower Abs & Deep Core [0]
Wall Oblique Crunch 90-degree bend, but you twist your elbow toward the opposite knee on the lift Side Abs (Obliques)

Crucial Form Tips

• ❌ Do Not Yank Your Neck: If your neck hurts, it means your hands are doing the pulling instead of your abs. Keep your gaze focused on the ceiling or your knees, not your stomach.
• 🪵 Keep Your Lower Back Glued: Your lower back must stay completely pressed into the floor throughout the entire movement. If it arches, slide your hips slightly closer to the wall.
• 🎯 Controlled Tempo: Avoid rushing. Perform the crunch using a “2-1-2” tempo: 2 seconds to lift, 1-second squeeze at the top, and 2 seconds to lower down.
Would you like to build an at-home core routine using these wall variations, or are you experiencing any lower back discomfort that we need to adjust for?
