I first spoke to today’s guest back on Episode 342 – and that episode has become one of the most downloaded episodes of the year – it has transformed the lives of many women – and men and I think this conversation will do the same.

Dr Mindy Pelz is a nutrition expert, a pioneer on the subject of women’s health & hormones, and the author of Fast Like A Girl and The Menopause Reset: Get Rid of Your Symptoms and Feel Like Your Younger Self Again.

Mindy’s aim is to empower women by explaining the biological changes that take place each month and throughout a woman’s life. She believes that, armed with that knowledge, they can improve their health, happiness and relationships. But this conversation is just as relevant for men.

We start off discussing whether weight gain is inevitable as we age. Is it our fate – and particularly a woman’s fate – to gain weight once she hits 40? It can be, she tells me, but only if women don’t know how to harness their hormones to prevent it. She explains how declining oestrogen levels can make women insulin resistant – which may be one the reasons why the diet and lifestyle that worked for them in their 20s and 30s, no longer does once they hit 40.

At the same time, declining levels of progesterone, the calming hormone, can result in lower-quality sleep, more perceived stress and increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol – which, in and of itself, will contribute to an increase in belly fat. It makes so much sense when Mindy explains it, but unfortunately, this information is still not widely known.

We cover so many different topics, including:

• How to adjust when and what you eat during different phases of your cycle.
• The importance of gut health when thinking about hormonal health.
• Why women often handle stress in a different way to men.
• The impact that hormonal changes can have on brain function.
• The practical steps we can take to improve our sleep.
• The importance of lifestyle changes irrespective of whether a woman chooses to have HRT or not.
• The best times in a woman’s cycle to resolve conflict and deal with relationship issues.

This episode is jam-packed with insightful information and practical take-homes. I hope you enjoy listening.

  1. Mostly stay away from listening to titles like this; it's typical clickbait. I usually listen to your podcast, but just commented and left on this one 🤷🏽‍♀️

  2. What about if you are anaemic and have heavy periods, doesn’t fasting and increasing exercise at the beginning of your cycle deplete you more?

  3. What about people who get headaches during fasting (for more than 24 hours). What is the reason (is the brain craving some glucose) and can you tackle this?

  4. I am a little confused. You are talking about (post)menopause, so a period is no longer there. What about that, there is no cycle anymore. How can I translate this to postmenopausal period?

  5. This podcast made me cry 😢 I feel like she Dr. Mindy read my heart, because that’s what I am going through right now is perimenopause and I feel like I’m going crazy 😭 I am so thankful I found her channel and your podcast. I have implemented all of her advice on how to deal with this part of my life and I can already see the difference in how I feel and it’s only been a week. Thank you so much for having her on your show, more women need to hear this because we don’t talk about it enough and most of us feel like we’re going through this faze by ourselves. We suffer in silence, but not anymore and thanks to you Dr. Mindy. ☺

  6. Progesterone is a steroid hormone that serves as a building block for other hormones, including estradiol. Through a series of enzymatic conversions, progesterone can be transformed into androstenedione, which can then be converted into testosterone and ultimately estradiol

  7. Progesterone is a precursor to estradiol so increased progesterone to fix everything else. It gets depleted from elevated cortisol and chronic stress. And people with trauma are constantly producing cortisol so that contributes to anxiety, which is a side effect of progesterone deficiency, mineral deficiency, B vitamin deficiency, good fat deficiency, etc…

  8. Me personally, I started losing the most weight after reading the book Woman’s weight loss secrets: the unspoken truth, a few things you are mentioning in this video are also in the book

  9. ..not quite right about darkness in the UK around November darkness will be about 5pm. It's December when sunset is around 4pm and this will go all the way to about January 31st where it will be around 4,30 pm.

  10. I had a complete hysterectomy 33 years ago only started taking estrogen in the forl of vag tabs anywar ago inqm in bad shape as far as dryness goes. I was on no hormones for 33 years. Im 45 lbs over weight only in the belly area and im fighting to get healthy im 61 years old ..

  11. I don't know if I can ask my question here but although fasting intrigues me strongly and I certainly believe in it, I'm still in a dilemma.

It is stated that since early times people had periods of fasting and more food.

This means that their body was also self-healing and therefore healthier.

Why did people become much less old and die of all kinds of diseases while we now live much longer.

Maybe a stupid question but I'm with it.

  12. I love this video so so much!!!! As a woman, this helps to understand my own body and to understand my daughter and other women in my environment. Thank you so much ☺️🙏

  13. Great insights, Dr. Pelz and Dr. Chatterjee! As someone who works with women over 40, I often see them struggle with weight loss despite following healthy habits. What are your thoughts on balancing hormones as a key factor in fat loss, especially during perimenopause and menopause? Have you found any specific approaches that work best for this age group?

  14. This is phenomenal. I think I'm going crazy at times. I am 56. I had a partial hysterectomy in the middle of going through menopause. I have fewer normal feeling days. I get over stimulated easily. I have no clue what phase my body is at or where to begin to get back to any kind of normal.

  15. Both of you are going to prison for paying Kid Rock to take me out for the Illuminati Freemasons Epstein network and you're gonna give back what you stole from me too

  16. Sleep apnoea will definitely put weight on you, irrespective of what you eat, because it definitely affects how insulin is metabolised. What you eat is little to do with it in that case!
