You’re unlikely to gain weight on vegetables, but you will if you eat too much fruit.

Is it possible to gain weight on fruits and vegetables? It depends on the amount you’re consuming, and the frequency that you consume them.
It’s unlikely you’ll gain weight on vegetables. You might think “potato”; well, I’m not talking about potatoes. Of course, you’ll gain weight on potatoes, especially if you cook them and release their sugar, which will cause a problem with your blood sugars.
But if you consider, for example, leafy greens, 7 cups of a salad with other vegetables, would only give you 10.8 grams of carbs. That’s very low! 7 grams of that is fiber, so we’re really talking 3.8 grams net carbs. The sugar content is also very low.
You just can’t gain weight on this because the fiber doesn’t affect your insulin. You can’t eat enough fiber, because of its bulk, to eat too many carbs. You may get bloating or fluid retention that could result in weight gain, but it’s not fat. If you’re not used to consuming vegetables, and you’re suddenly gaining weight, it’s a digestive issue. Reduce the number of vegetables. You may have an overgrowth of bacteria in your small intestine, called SIBO. You can watch my videos on SIBO.
What about fruits, will they cause you to gain weight? Absolutely, but it depends on the amount and frequency that you eat them.
If you’re snacking on fruit, like I was several years ago, you can gain weight. I did. I cut out fruit and went from 211 pounds to 180 pounds.
In the past, there was wild watermelon, with completely different carbohydrate and sugar levels. So too for wild bananas, wild carrots, wild corn, and wild peaches. As well, there were wild apples, called crabapples, which were very tart without much fructose. You could literally chip a tooth biting into one because it was so dense with fiber.
Over the years, growers have changed our fruit to make them sweeter, with more sugar, resulting in more fructose. One apple contains 19 grams of sugar. That’s a lot!
Fructose is metabolized by your liver, which can lead to insulin resistance and belly fat. Fruits do contain vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients which will protect you against sugar, but you will gain weight if you consume too much fruit.

Yes I do that… I get fat from fruits…
Carbs can’t make you fat
fructose from table sugar and natural sugars translates differently in the way the body processes it and eliminates it, everyone leaves that part out, that what is natural and unnatural is not going to have the same effects
fruits also have fibers and water
have you ever heard of the spud man , he ate nothing but potatoes did not gain any weight.
Why are fruitarians always thin?
I‘m still confused (I don‘t know if I should eat fruits for healthy weight gain (without tandle cycle upregulation) or not)
Honestly i cut out chips, chocolate and soda. I eat as much fruit and veggies as i want and i feel amazing and lost over 20 pounds.
Hi Dr. Berg.
What do u recommend in terms of good vegetable recipes? Are stir-frys a good idea?
It was still on and here we go again. He should not say you will gain weight eating potatoes. Makes no difference what you eat it's all about the calories if you eat a small potato but you go jogging after dinner……… You can't say you will gain weight if you eat potatoes because that's just not true. Their hind calories. My body might naturally burn loads more calories than the next guys but as long as I'm burning more than ingesting it doesn't matter how many potatoes ate these people make me so mad. I rant
It's always the same with people who think like this. First of all it is very dangerous to only eat fruit. Second everybody's metabolic buildup and rate are not going to be the same. This is what happens to you, not this is what happens. Different fruits and berries are going to be much much higher than other of their counterparts fructose for example….. Do I need to go on….
I ate nothing but fruit for 4 months and lost a ton of weight.
I like how you use yourself as a working example. Great educative content.
What about mangos 🥭 I love them but they’re so sweet can I eat them to lose body fat?
I’m 170lbs 5’5 overweight and always tired female I want to reach 115lbs so which fruits should I be eating when wanting to burn that fat while breaking fast? 😅
Thanks for your great work doktor i can't get weight i haven't enough blood i have influematery acne i am fasting in the morning i eat at 6 o'clock and evening at 7 o'clock what wil i do i wanna get weight
And here i thought i had solved the issue with a diet based on potatoes, apples and pears… damn
I eat as much vegetable as I want should i count the calories,
When you say you cut out the fruit, did you replace it with anything?
I can only lose weight being fruitarian 🤔🤔🤔 whhen i switched to only eating broccoli and mushrooms i gained… Now fruitarian and losing again so i dont get it
I’ll have only eat and drink air from now on😢😢
How people gain weight easily and quickly? I can eat anything (including whey protein) and still I am 42 at 20 age. I have IBS but I don't know how to fix the "weight loss" part of it. I have visited doctora but I wasn't satisfied as they were not very serious about treating me. 😭😭
Fruits gain weight as the fructose converts into fat in liver theory says.
In reality fruit does not gain fat.
I've been eating several apples oranges banana and other fruit trying to be healthy. Peeling my apples to avoid the crap they spray them with. Wtf am I supposed to eat
👍👍
dr sebi was talking about wild vs manmade fruits
Tell that to a Silverback Gorilla
Everyone I know who eats a majority of fruits and vegetables is overweight
Also mention how much fat is included as well?
I notice I'm eating alot of fruit and not losing weight. I'm learning fast about dieting. I'm going let fruits go and start eating more vegatble. I weight 270 pounds and give up undated in 4 week. My blood sugar is 115 I will give a update on that too.
I started eating only fruits and vegetables and gained 8 lbs very quickly. I was shocked and now I’m ticked! I ate tons of grapes, apples, avocados, broccoli, tomatoes, zucchini, chicken all the healthy stuff! NOw what???!! 😢
Congratulations on your "Is It Possible To Gain Weight On Fruit And Vegetables? – Dr Berg" inspirational thanks for sharing. 🍏🍎⚖.
It would be an automatic calorie deficit I would ease into it if you’re not used to consuming so much. Berries are my go to fruit!
Why not , animals are vegans and they do gain weight from consuming vegies
I’ve lost 60 pounds only eating fruit. I’m also a type one diabetic.
How about green beans and peas
Sir melons means watermelon too…
I have become a on this diet…now ent to gain healthy weight.
So which will help me gain healthy weight half kg of fruit with 340 calories or one Indian roti with one twenty calories
I keep seeing not to mix fruits with veggies. Are there any side effects or issues mixing them? Doing intermittent Fasting, if I have 2 meals or 1 mean a day when I can eat the fruit. I must have a normal meal, the fruit will not fill me up
I lose weight like crazy eating unlimited potatoes
I have lost 40 pounds in two months. I fasted for four days and then started on my diet. Which consist of eggs, green beans, bell peppers, and onions. I have been snacking on nuts in between meals. I use A lot of hot ingredients such as jalapeños, pepper flakes, chilies, hot sauces, salt and pepper, I use soy sauce as well. Even though I started out a 387 pounds I am down to 340. My whole life my cholesterol has always been low around 178 and I have low sodium which must be hereditary. My brothers can’t understand why they have high cholesterol and I don’t especially being almost 400 pounds. I do eat meat every other day which only consist of about 4 to 6 ounces a day. And I’ve learned to love cooking for myself.
What about Fruitarians..they think we are crazy ….
I've lived both fruitarian and as a raw foodist and a cooked vegan for periods. It is completely impossible to get fat on those diets. Fruit is the least likely by far. The amount of fruit and sugar you'd have to take in is obscene. But of course, if the "Doctor" says so.
What about cooked vegetables like choys/leaves??? Bruh Chinese dinner 50-70% all vegetables, 10-20% meat and 10-30% rice :U
Starting to gain weight :/
And eat, apple at the end
