Think your “healthy habits” are helping you lose weight? Think again. Today on Abbey’s Kitchen, we’re unpacking the surprising ways well-meaning weight loss hacks can totally backfire. From over-restricting calories, to skipping sleep for your 6am HIIT, to falling for “protein” snacks that aren’t as filling as they seem — some of these might shock you.

We’ll talk about diet culture’s obsession with extremes, why balance matters more than rules, and how stress (yes, even “healthy stress”) can actually stall your progress. And of course, a reminder — this isn’t about saying you should lose weight. My goal is to give you evidence-based, no-BS info so you can make the best choices for YOU.

If you’ve ever wondered why your diet isn’t working, or you feel like you’re “doing everything right” but seeing no progress, you’ll definitely want to tune in.

  1. I appreciate your content so much! I've recently started focusing on a very high protein high fibre whole foods & higher-calorie-than-usual breakfast within an hour of waking & am shocked how it has completely removed any & all food noise or non-physical hunger signals for the rest of the day! It's so much easier to eat a lean protein/vegetable heavy lunch & then share a nice homemade dinner with my partner with no inclination to eat anything more afterward. I never really thought that would be possible for me, & notice I revert right back to impulsive eating when I eat a lighter breakfast, especially lighter in fibre.

  2. About point #2, I really hate social media telling me that I should make wake up time at 6AM everyday, including the weekends. It’s not feasible to get quality sleep and wake up that early if I have to work until midnight every so often. It’s one of those times where I feel social media gets out of touch with what it’s like to have a job where the schedule is not completely under your control.

  3. Abby what is this title? I can tolerate some click bait titles because I understand you have to consider the algorithm. but here you are playing on women’s weight fears in order to get viewers. that seems pretty antithetical to the values/message you’ve said you hold in the past. did you get the engagement you wanted? guess it got me to leave a comment…

  4. Protein-boosted foods are a trap I fall into. I used to rarely eat chips, but a label saying it's got protein encourages me to add it to my diet. Same with the shakes – rarely drank anything but water, seltzer, coffee or tea, but started making them part of my diet, and don't get me started on the candy bars. I'm trying to put them back in their place – a treat – but they increased my taste for junk food.

I'm glad your growing and changing – not easy even if your life is private, hell if you're main job is public content. I've always found some little kernels of wisdom and helpful tips in your videos.

  5. Every few months I weigh/measure my food for a few days, just to see where I am falling. It's a pain to do all the time which is why I only do every once and awhile as a guide. It is super easy for the servings to start inching up and before you know it you are eating more calories then you realized. I find this happens for me a lot with shredded cheese. I use a sprinkle on my breakfast, but this week has shown me I am using more then I should be/used to and it's adding an extra like 150 calories to my breakfast every day which is really throwing off my calorie deficit. This data allows me to make a small adjustment that has a big impact.

  6. I thought she was against diet culture and weight loss and pro health at every size? Or she wasnt getting enough clicks/money doing that so this is the new fad she is following since ozempic is now big?

  7. When I was a freshman in high school, I was eating 300-500 calories a day, running, cycling and often doing other things to get rid of any food I did eat. I never binged. I never overate. Behaviorally I was in AN. I weighed 135-160. If your body doesn’t adapt, how do we explain this?

  8. I've heard that using a TDEE calculator makes weight loss a lot less complicated. You shouldn't go lower than your BMR for obvious reasons and it'll show you how many calories to consume to achieve weight loss.

  9. Can we buy LMNT in the U.K? I watch a lot of fantastic fellow Mounjaro users that are in the U.S and they all seam to be taking and racing about it!
Could you let me know as I'd love to try it!

  10. 😩 I lived in diet mode but never saw results. Turns out some of my so-called “healthy habits” were actually stressing my body. A friend in my gut group told me to try the Eat to Burn Protocol (by Alex Blake). I gave it a chance and dropped 30 lbs. I finally feel like I’m working with my body instead of against it.

  11. I was a bit shocked to see a weight loss video from you too, but after watching – can greatly appreciate you debunking some of these "healthy habits" that can keep so many of us on the hamster wheel of restrictive eating and food obsession for far longer than any of us ever need to be EVER. Sending love to all who read and watch 🙏

  12. Long time viewer. Just had my second child 16 years after my first at age 37. I gained a lot of weight this time, breastfeeding, hx of ed as a teen, and struggling because I want to shed the weight fast but know it’s not the best decision. Would you be interested in discussing this, or do you have past videos on this topic? Thanks for the info as always Abbey!

  13. I successfully lost weight doing Intermittent Fasting, but it was also a stressful time. I ended up fainting multiple times in a few months. Made the decision to stop and have since gained back some of the weight. Have not lost since, but have been eating pretty healthfully. Doctor wants me to try a GLP-1, but I am my Father's sole caregiver, so I have declined as of now.

  14. I found that getting a tooth pulled made me unable to chew and led to a 5 pound weight loss that I have been trying to do for years. I’m eating way less meat and puréed vegetables and beans. Not ideal but we’ll see how long it lasts!

  15. Another thing that sabotages weight loss is doing the exact same workout routine everyday.
Your body gets used to it very quickly and you plateau.
You must “surprise” your body with constant change to keep burning calories.

  16. I offer this as information: Robb Wolf (LMNT's co-founder) and James Murphy (co-founder & CEO of LMNT) have repeatedly shared support for RFK Jr on social media platforms. Wolf also endorsed Jay Bhattacharya for NIH Director, who is a co-author for a eugenicist declaration.

  17. Thanks for all the sneaky things that can sabotage weight loss. The only one that seems to fit for me is switching the times I eat which means I wouldn't be eating with my family due to work schedule (we don't eat dinner until 9/930pm when hubby gets home from work).
I would love some ideas on perimenopause weight loss. There's so many voices out there that my head is spinning.
