In this video, you’ll discover the 6 core foundations of weight loss for men that will help you lose weight and keep it off. So say goodbye to trendy diets or quick fix procedures that don’t last because it’s all about the fundamentals.
#1 The Importance of Sleep (1:06)
As a man over 50, if you’re not getting at least 6-7 hours of quality sleep each night, you’re fighting an uphill battle with weight loss. Because poor sleep habits make our body extremely resistant to losing weight. If you’re in a sleep-deprived state, your body begins to burn off muscle tissue instead of fat, further decreasing your metabolism and results. Hello, flabby gumby.
#2 Getting a Schedule Based Meal Plan (2:23)
When it comes to weight loss nutrition for men over 50, there are way too many plans offering you a one size fits all, restrictive diet approach. Because, we want long-term sustainable results, and anybody on a strict diet is counting the days until they can get off of it.
That last idea is why we emphasize a more inclusive meal plan for weight loss. It doesn’t force you to eliminate all carbs or all fats, and just as important, it offers different timing schedules to fit your daily routine.

#3 Hydration is Key (6:32)
Remember that old saying ‘drink eight 8oz glasses of water each day’. Well, while that’s a good start, your optimal water target for weight loss is MUCH higher than that. Your actual target is your body weight in lbs/2 + 32 oz (1lb=0.45kg). So for a 200lb man, (200/2 +32), the daily target is 132 oz (1 gallon is around 126 oz). Yes that’s a lot of water, and yes you’re going to be hitting the bathroom frequently, but the benefits are well worth it.

#4 Do 30 Minutes of Daily Activity (8:18)
We’re not talking about formal workouts here. We’re talking about roughly 30 mins of light jogging, cycling, playing with your kids, or even walking. Committing to a consistent routine of daily activity triggers your brain to stop sending constant hunger cues.
The easiest place to start working this into your daily routine is to have a step counter and shoot for around 7,000-10,000 steps each day. Because the 30 minutes doesn’t have to be done all at once. As long as you’re getting it throughout the day, you’ll reap the benefits.
#5 Weight Loss Workouts – Metabolic Resistance Training (10:13)
When talking about the best workouts for weight loss, we want to combine 2 different workouts into one. The first one is strength training and the second is high-intensity cardio. We want strength training to boost our metabolism by building muscle, and we want high-intensity cardio for accelerated fat burning.
And the best part about these workouts is that they only take around 25-40 mins to burn fat and boost your metabolism for up to 24 hours afterwards.
This Free 24 Minute Workout is what you need for weight loss:
#6 Use Smart Weight Loss Supplements (12:53)
Whenever we talk about weight loss for men over 50, we always address supplements last because they’re ‘supplemental.’ You’ll see much better results from everything else we discussed in this video and most aren’t worth the price tag. That being said, we do recommend including certain supplements in your weight loss routine that’ll improve your body’s overall function & health.
Our top recommendations for men:
– High-quality multivitamin
– Fish Oil (Omega 3 fatty acids)
– Probiotics

👋 Dr. A here. If you're a busy dad over 40 and want a simple place to start, grab our free 1-Week Plan (meal plan + workouts, built for men 40+): https://bit.ly/yt-pin-plan-6-foundations-50
Number one is sleep: CORRECT. I'm 61 and not feeling great. I saw an otologist a few weeks back in China. He found chronic infection in both ears, which in truth I'd suffered for decades. Looking with a probe at my inner ear he showed me it has gone white. This is a sign of prolonged poor sleep patterns. I've now set the alarm on my phone and shall be sticking to bed time/wake up calls like glue.
I’ve lost 65 pounds so far. The fat that is left will not come off. I’m thinking I should lift every day instead of 3 days per week. Very frustrated! My body is fighting back.
I like any channels/videos that dont claim one way (their way) is the answer. Nice to see a guy on here who recognises life's more complicated than that and who seems more interested in helping than making some money.
How to do this type of plan when you are working swing shift one day and then grave yard shift the next, then switch again?
I'm 53 and began a whole foods diet last summer, IF 16:8, drinking water only and morning walks before breakfast. Lost a ton of weight.
I know everyone is different. I hope you can answer my question. I'm 61. I'm 6'0" tall. I'm 253 pounds. I was 180 pounds from age 25-40. Should I be shooting for 180? I don't have the same muscle mass. Should I, because I'm older, be carrying some waist line fat?
Is 200 pounds an ideal weight?
I'm eating last meal before 6pm. I sleep at 10pm. I wake up at 5am. I drink black coffee. I walk 30 minute before my breakfast at 10-11am. I work in the garden. I swim 45 mintes before my fruit snack/lunch.
I was drinking 2 gallons of whole milk a week. I stopped that and all chips, bread, and pasta. After this clip, I'm concentrating on 1.25 gallons of H2O daily. I was diagnosed with a fatty liver on an ultrasound. No liver, NO LIVE ! Yikes !
I tapped the thumbs up button to feed the algorithm monsters.
Thank you so much.
p.s. I'm sorry it was so long.
what about 75 year olds
One of the clearest explanations I’ve seen.
I dropped from 210 to 185. Eating Keto, walking, bike riding. My diabetes is gone too! A1c 4.7! When you hit 40 or 50 you have to change your diet!
I wish 1 gallon of water a day did not cause me to have to pee every 30 mins.
For the water target. Do I use the weight I want to be? (160 lbs) Or the weight I am (230 lbs) to figure my water target per day?
How do you do that ( especially about meals and sleep) when you are on a total chaotic schedule and multiples time zone crossing every other day like a long hall line pilot on a heavy 100 hrs flight hours/ months ( 130+ duty hours) schedule???
51 , diabetic journey going good. This is a good boost!
Really informative as a 53 yr old dad journey starts here thankyou
please use SI units
Who in the name of all that is good is able to consistently get 7 hours of quality sleep daily?!😢
Wow thanks for the info, I’m 56y.o 5.8” and 210 and I’m starting this week on my weight loss journey. Also need more info.
Once I hit 50 I started having more joint and muscle problems (strains, pulls, etc). Please give more exercises that don't stress the joints and are not HIIT based. Thanks.
I am 73 years young (and fit)🎉
This video could of been 9mins
I lost 50 lbs from intermediate fasting I can't eat 4 meals a day I will eat to many calories
This video was uploaded six years ago from 2024. Longevity scientists are saying two meals are better than three plus a snack. Limit your sugar spikes is the key. From what I understand.
Can you recommend a good multi vitamin that is reasonable with each daily value
being 56 if I drank that much water I would have to urinate every 10 minutes. I would never get good sleep as I would have to get up most of night to use the toilet.
52. 50 lbs overweight. Today I change. Lets do it. I'm too young to feel this bad all the time.
Best thing I ever did to loose weight. Totally give up alcohol.. Not only good in itself. But no groggy mornings of "I don't wanna go for a walk", or "Eh, Let's just grab McDonalds on the way to work instead of having a real breakfast"
You are skimming over a lot of small details that are essential for losing weight after 50! You are trying to simplify a very complex topic so you can get a lot of likes on your YouTube channel!
How do you get proper sleep if you have sleeping problems like a lot of elderly people have?
I'm 55 and morbidly obese. I just started working out at the gym 5 days a week doing the treadmill 30 minutes each day. I was looking on the internet for some advice for older men and found your video. I intend to change my routine starting tomorrow morning. I'm shooting for losing 60 pounds by the end of the year. I feel like your fitness plan sounds like it will help me achieve my goals. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
