Why the Scale Goes Up When You’re Losing Weight | My 2-Month Comeback After 60

Two months into my 100-pound weight-loss journey, I got a pretty spectacular reminder that the bathroom scale does not tell the whole story.

I had an unexpected ER visit where I received IV fluids and sodium, followed by a wonderful wedding, restaurant food, cake, a cocktail, electrolytes and a whole lot of dancing. Then I stepped on the scale.

And yep. It went up.

There was a time when seeing a jump on the scale would have completely messed with my head. I would have immediately decided I’d done something wrong, ruined my progress or somehow gained back everything I’d worked so hard to lose.

But that’s not what happened.

My body had been through a LOT in a very short period of time. A change on the scale after IV fluids, sodium, different foods, a celebration and everything else that weekend was not evidence that my entire journey had suddenly gone backward.

And THAT is what I want to talk about in this video.

Because at 62, I’m learning that if I’m going to make this comeback different from every other time I’ve tried to lose weight, I cannot let one number determine whether I think I’m succeeding or failing.

So for my two-month Comeback Over 50™ update, I’m pulling out something besides the scale.
Two months into my comeback, I got a pretty spectacular reminder that the bathroom scale does not tell the whole story.

I had an unexpected ER visit where I received IV fluids, followed by a wonderful wedding, restaurant food, a taste of cake, a cocktail, electrolytes and a whole lot of dancing. Then I stepped on the scale.

And yep. It went up.

There was a time when that jump would have completely messed with my head. I would have decided I’d ruined my progress or somehow gained back everything I’d worked so hard to lose.

But that’s not what happened.

My body had been through a LOT in a very short period of time. A change on the scale after IV fluids, sodium, different foods and a celebration was not evidence that my entire journey had suddenly gone backward. It wasn’t a setback. It was life.

At 62, I’m learning that if I’m going to make this comeback different from every other time I’ve tried, I cannot let one number decide whether I’m succeeding or failing.

So I’m paying attention to the things that matter more: how my clothes fit, my energy, my appetite, how I’m moving and what’s changing in my mindset. And for the first time in a long time, I looked at a picture of my husband and me at the wedding and thought, “Actually… we look pretty good.”

Bodies fluctuate. Life happens. One weigh-in doesn’t tell the story of what you’ve been doing for the last week, month or year.

And I’m finally learning not to give that little box on my bathroom floor quite so much power. ❤️

Tell me in the comments: What do YOU pay attention to besides the scale?

  1. I just found you too! I can really relate to your journey! Thank you for sharing your content!
I just started IF last night again. Doing low carb and trying to move more. You are giving me hope that I am not alone. ❤
I am looking forward to binge watching your channel to catch up on your journey so far.

  2. Thank you….i stay off the scale for the most part…it’s not the boss of me, lol…I feel the loss in my jeans, my tops and that’s what keeps me on track.

  3. Take the power from the scale by tracking weekly average! ❤ That was a game changer for my mental health. One day's number is not the true value of a week's work! 🎉 To this day I add the 7 days & then divide by 7 & that is my weight for that week – crazy how you really see the movement down more consistently that way. Thank you for sharing. Yes pics & measurements are huge tools too. Your face has significant change – especially in chin area – great job 🎉

  4. I love your videos and humor!! We are all human and just need to breathe and be… My scale won't budge after 2 weeks…but I'm just continuing on as I was and see what my body wants to do. I've asked my body to tell me, but she's super quiet. 😂

  5. Wowzers! Those photos show an amazing improvement along with those measurements. I am SO GLAD you showed those stats because they show the REAL improvements! Congratulations on your journey!

  6. It is a rollercoaster ride for sure. You have to live life too. That is why I look at this journey as an 18- month odyssey, with maintenance following, for the rest of my life. Yes! I see a difference. I am not a tracker, but with the help of Mounjaro (tirzepatide), exercise, and good nutrition (with a daily, mental awareness of protein, fiber and water intake), I will be 'whatever', a year from now, and happy that I am thinner and much, much healthier.

  7. Definitely retaining fluids!!! Same for me, went away for the weekend and ate fairly well but still came home and up on the scale by 3 pounds. I’m like whatever!

  8. Yes, I can see the difference. The scale is not a the best tool to use. Measuring makes a big difference and helps show the progress. I also use a RENPHO scale and it goes up and down as well. I notice the water gains, the muscle gain and losses, based on that scale. We all have to keep doing our best and that's all we can do. You're doing great! Keep up the good work! 😊

  9. The scale kinda Drives you crazy. My scale goes up & Down like the Weather. usually up @ 1-pound..or Even or down 1-pound. But not really much change. I was told too give up prunes..and watch out for nuts. Prunes i cant seem to give up. There is no-way. The Benefits outweigh the negatives. Almonds & Nuts are my weak point. Sometimes when I'm Dragging i want a handful of almonds. But I just bought some ''Flax-meal'' the other day..and it tastes like chopped nuts..I like the Texture…It's good with Green-Apple…and Greek-Yogurt.!!
