A woman in menopause asked me whether she could get rid of her menopausal belly fat with the keto diet, and which diet is overall the best for menopause. Here’s my answer:

Keto is the best for losing menopausal belly fat and in general for menopause. When you go through menopause you have a sudden loss of ovarian function which comes along with a spike in insulin. No one’s sure why except that now your adrenals have to work harder. You also get a spike in cortisol, which breaks down muscle protein and turns it into glucose. This is what causes the insulin spike.

In menopause, you’re likely to develop insulin resistance which in turn causes belly fat. If you have belly fat the odds of your having liver fat are high. Fat spills over from your belly to your organs.

Here are other conditions and symptoms of high insulin:

●Bone loss
●Prediabetes
●Moodiness
●Hot flashes
●Memory loss
●Muscle loss
●High blood pressure
●Decreased libido
●Cravings for carbs and starches
●Cardiac problems
●High cholesterol

Here’s what to do to lower your insulin:

●Cut carbs to 20-50 grams per day. Have as many vegetables as you want. If your metabolism is slow, go with 20 or fewer.
●Consume a moderate amount of protein. Click the link below to learn how to do keto.
●Do not go low fat. Eating enough fat will help you feel full longer and help you to do intermittent fasting, which will drop insulin faster than anything.
●Do intermittent fasting. Start with 3 meals per day, no snacks. Do this until you don’t feel hungry between meals. Then move to 2 meals per day; then 1 if you have a lot to lose. If you’re not hungry don’t eat.

If you’re a diabetic, have a thyroid issue, or have a lot of weight to lose, you may want to take it one step further. You can eat one meal a day (OMAD) every other day. Check out the link below for how to do this. Basically, when you’re in fat-burning mode your hunger decreases, making it easier to go longer periods without eating.

Eating once every 48 hours probably sounds drastic and I don’t recommend it for everyone. But if you reach a situation where you aren’t seeing the results you want, consider it. I linked below to some videos explaining the nutrition you need to take when you’re fasting.

This is the healthiest way to lose weight, better than those low-calorie diets where you struggle and eventually regain all the lost weight. Better to be in ketosis (fat burning) to lose your menopausal belly fat.

  1. Can you do a video for women who are post menopause? I tried the keto diet, and I lost a lot of muscle on my legs and butt and need to know how to regain muscles on my leg and butt/60 years old. I’m not on the keto diet anymore, but need to get on it again because of stomach fat.

  2. I just went keto a few weeks ago. When will I start to see the belly shrink? I don't snack. I fast. I'm only drinking water. When should I see results? Anyone please I feel desperate and miserable from lack of estrogen. Please talk to me.😢

  3. Ugh, I'm in menopause and have a hypothyroid issue. So I've gone from a very fast metabolism to almost no metabolism. I'm also a pescetarian and only eat salmon when I can afford it. I am taking choline and drinking a lot more water. Help!!

  4. I've been keto since 2018 with good results and feeling great. But I'm menopausal now and even though I'm on HRT and have incorporated a little more resistance training into my exercise routine, I did gain around the belly and the weight has been harder to go away than it used to be before menopause. So at this point, I need to do something a little different than what used to work for me but now doesn't. I've started rotating small amounts of complex carbs in my diet on workout days (half of a sweet potato, wild rice, Ezequiel bread, or cassava tortillas) to kick-start my thyroid and help balance things out.

  5. omg thank you ! I turned 50 November 4th and i have gained belly fat and i’m uncomfortable . bloat, and stretch pants have become my life.
    i start tomorrow omad.

  6. Hi Dr Berg, I watch all your videos that come up and found your advice around melting the belly fat very useful! It’s been a week since I’ve been following your tips. Within a few days me, my husband and friends could see the difference.
I am 50 years old I the perimenopausal stage. My blood sugar levels were always high and belly fat accumulated no matter what. To top it up since 3 years I have been suffering with bloating.
My inflammation markers have always been high no matter how many times I go to the gym and no matter how healthy I ate.
Well that’s all changing now. I no longer have the bloating issue nor stomach lining issues since I started eating according to your lose belly fat tips and according to keto style, thanks to you. 😊
I feel so energetic, lighter although my weight shows I’ve gained weight (2kg). The main thing is that I’m not bloated, I feel great and I’m going longer between meals. I will continue eating keto style and get my blood test done in a month to see how my blood sugar levels are. Thankyou 🙏

  7. Dr. Berg, I want to start taking ginko biloba, Im 40 , perimenopause and my memory declined dramatically im so scared of dementia. How safe is it and how much. I hear scary things about it too so I'm kinda scared to take it. Any advice please help

  8. Dr. Berg, you hit the nail on the head. I've been watching your videos and love them. I love sugar! Wake up and have a big glass of chocolate milk, then 3 cups of coffee with 3 spoonful's of sugar each plus 3 in the evening. would eat junk all day long. gained 20lbs in 6 months. My husband and I started Keto 8 days ago. I haven't felt this good in a long time and it's only been 8 days. My ketosis blood test reads 1.1! I'm not craving sugar at all. I've lost 6 lbs. I only ate once yesterday just because I wasn't hungry. I also just started doing the treadmill I purchased. Oh, I'm also 58 years old. Start weight 170, now 164. I plan to hit my goal weight by the end of the year. Fingers crossed

  9. Jeez THANK YOU! Im not in menopause, but definitely in peri, and for some reason, I never ever had breakfast because I was not hungry. You have no idea how many people told me I was ruining my metabolism and whatnot. I followed what my body told me when intermittent fasting wasn't even a thing! Now I am 47, 49/50kg for 160cm, and at the moment, unfortunately, sedentary for personal reasons.

I was never too active like a gym junkie, but I practiced a lot of sports when a teenager, and I have good muscle memory, so yes, I might be lucky, but now I see a little belly/bloating (just a hint really), and being Italian imagine if /how I could cut pasta/pizza and bread 🙂 But I'm doing this experiment and eating A LOT of proteins from meat and fish, mainly veggies and healthy fats.

In 10 days, my bloating went down, I lost 1 kg (and I don't want to lose more as this is my ideal weight), and the belly fat is almost gone. I "cheat" because I still can, so I'll have a small portion of pasta or a full pizza even. I'm tired of hearing that I'm doing things wrong when I follow my body, and it has always responded with a high metabolism, lean body, and no weight issue ever, not even in my late 40s! Thanks for this video. It is fascinating and reassuring! I'll stock up on salmon and avocadoes 😀

  10. I do keto and so long as I eat every 3 hours, my gallbladder doesn’t give me problems. IF is what started my gallstones. Soluble fiber is the only thing that helps it. So, any advice on trying to IF in this situation?

  11. Gosh, I wish Keto was working for me during menopause. I have been doing keto for 7 years with great success. Now I am in menopause and boom…not working anymore. I have gained all of the weight back in the last year. Strangely enough as well, my thyroid is also gone wacko. I have Hashimotos that has been well controlled on Synthroid for 20 years. Last 6 months, suddenly I severely hyperthyroid! Tsh of .05 . Dose has been decreased, but still not in a good range. You would think I would be losing weight with a hyperactive thyroid. Nope, gaining like crazy🤦‍♀️. I hate menopause. Mother nature is cruel to women.
