What if just 15 minutes per week could dramatically improve your cardiovascular fitness, insulin sensitivity, fat loss efforts, stress resilience, and overall health?
In this video, Dr. Rachel Felber, ER physician and women’s health & strength coach, breaks down the science behind High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and explains why it may be one of the most effective exercises women over 40 can add to their fitness routine.
You’ll learn how properly structured HIIT workouts can help improve VO2 max, boost metabolic health, preserve muscle mass, increase energy levels, and support healthy aging—all without spending hours doing traditional cardio.
If you’re already strength training and trying to eat healthy but feel like you’re not getting the results you want, this video is for you.
You have more control than you think.

Always smiling.and great positivity❤
Wow! Best info on YT so far!!
That's something fitness trainer never told me. Surprise, Surprise. 🤔
So, once a week HIIT and twice a week full body strength training. Honestly, I don't need the expensive gym subscription!! HA!!!
Can we see a 15 minute workout?
Summary of how to do HIIT based on Dr. Rachel’s video
15-20 mins in length not including warm up and cool down
Go 30-45 seconds at high intensity so your heart is really pumping
Rest for 1.5-2 mins at 1/10 or 2/10 effort but the time is dependent on your heart rate going back to baseline range so this is individual
The recovery period is important and should not be skipped
Then do another 30-45 seconds (and repeat)
6-8 rounds of high intensity/rest cycle
You can do whatever movement/exercise works for your body – treadmill, outdoor running, rowing, swimming, stationary bike, burpees etc
You can get results with ONE HIIT session a week. You could do 2 a week but she doesn’t recommend more than that
I Ned a specific video to follow. Any suggestions?
So is the difference between sprints and HIIT training just the duration of time you spend at full effort output? I'm confused what the difference is
Wow, just watched an hour of your videos back to back! You give great information for practical how-to and just as important explaining the why!
I'm absolutely loving your videos Rachel. Thank you so much for research-based information related to post menopausal women! At nearly 70 I find it hard to engage in high impact exercise, but I am more able to by using seven minute phone apps which have high impact/rest. The one I'm using now doesn't seem to meet your criteria. The workouts are maybe not long enough and the rest periods are definitely not long enough.. What apps do you recommend?
I LOVE HIIT- been incorporating for many years. More recently, I’ve heard quite conflicting opinions about increased cortisol. What are your thoughts about increased cortisol?
Every Friday will be my HIIT day. Thank you!
Thank you for explaining HITS so efficiently! You are so knowledgeable!
I have controlled high bp should i do hiit?
This is great info! Like most people, i didn't know about the long rest period. My problem is not being able to work hard enough in 45 seconds to be unable to talk. When i look at what's recommended for my age for zone 3-4, it's 102 to 117. Is it worth doing HIIT at all if i can't get my heart rate up high enough?
Thank you for the great info…
I’m 45 and high intensity workouts made me feel terrible. I realized I needed to try something different. Low intensity such as walking daily and weights made me feel so much better
See, but that's the problem with getting older. I can't do that hit anymore, but I still have no problem with cardio or simple strength dreaming.
If you run with High intensity and you are not use to it, You Will get injured.
iv been running for 13 years. could i do one refular session per week amd one HIIT session per week? my only fear is to hurt my knee when i go from walking to running very fast ..is there a tip for the transition?
I’ve heard this type is not good for older because it spikes cortisol….🤷🏻♀️
New subscriper! Was interested in creatine supplements for post-menopausal women. You've given me much information and motivation to pursue muscle building, stress relieve, bone and brain health. THANKS!
I have been trying to do this on my 90 minute swim daily, not even knowing that it was so beneficial
I suspect I have lipedma and everything I researched is that it is made worse by inflammation. Also in Menopause, I cannot get the scale to budge more than a pound or two for over a year. Harder workouts can drive up inflammation. In my 20's 30's i was able to do these workouts and achieve fat and weight loss. But they don't seem to work now, neither does lifting weights. right before my last period I was able to keep up with the Carolin Girvan workouts and now I feel like a weakling. Menopause causing so much joint stiffness and pain. Past couple months for movement I have been doing gentle health bounce on a rebounder for 10 minutes and 10 minutes on a vibration plate followed by a flat walk at 3 speed on a treadmill with weighted vest. Started IF a couple of weeks ago. I may try a HIIT workout one day a week to see if it drives me into a flare or not.
What’s your take on Tabata? It seems like HIIT but in half the time (is it a ‘mini HIIT’?)
I needed this. 53. Been fit all my life. Now serious weight gain since menopause. ( which for me means slightly now overweight according to BMI) and no strength. Determined to start with 15 minutes every day. Already did the first 25 minutes while listening to you.
Is this AI? Serious question.
I have surgery on my knee. What kind of HIT I can do while I’m recovering.
Thank you for the great explanation! My Dr was telling me about these studies a while back & I didnt really understand & didn't wanna waste her time cause i didn't get it. 😂 Thank you again!
I’m so happy to hear HIT training can be done by swimming. I love doing laps but now I’m going to do 50 yard sprints with 2 min rests at least 5x in a row. I’ll see how that goes. Does that sound about right? I’m 75 and usually swim 50-70 laps at moderate speed 1-2x a week. I also do gym workouts with body weight or dumbbells 2x a week. .
Does jump roping count as HIIT training? Thanks for all the great info., appreciate it!
Does HIIT also raise cortisol levels?
Felt better after one HIIT! I'm 60, overweight and was very surprised, that I felt more energized within an hour afterward. (HIIT = 6 reps, 1 rep = 30 sec HARD cardio (fast jumping jacks & high knee jogging in place w/arms swinging) + 2:00 min SLOW walking like a zombie – total 18-20 min) I'm not gonna lie it kicked my butt, I was puffing and my heart was pounding and am glad it's only once a week. BUT I'm going to keep doing it along with picking up the weights again (after 20 years) protecting joints. Thank you Dr Rachel for remembering post menopausal ladies.
Thanks so much for sharing. I’ve started weight training. I used to do a lot of running. I do enjoy cardio. ❤xxx
During the high intensity portion, you mentioned that you should aim for 80-90% of your maximum heart rate for 30-45 seconds. Then enter the rest phase. What percentage of maximum heart rate should I aim for before starting another high intensity interval to know that I’ve fully recovered?
I have a dance and fitness background and would like to become certified as a women's health and strength coach. Is there a program you'd recommend? I'm over 60 so, not back to school (right now) but perhaps one of the online certifications?
