Weight Training Workout to Build Muscle for Beginners & Seniors // Strength w/ Dumbbells

Need to gain muscle strength due to sarcopenia (muscle loss) or weight loss drugs? This is the perfect 30 minute strength training workout for you! These exercises are ideal for beginners and will help build lean muscle mass.
This full body workout is all standing and is set to a timer where exercises are performed for 45 seconds followed by a 15 second rest. Please go at a pace that is comfortable for you. For reference, I’m using a set of 5 pound (2.2 kg) dumbbells. Please start with lighter weights, or no weights at all if you are just starting out. Feeling strong? grab those heavier weights!
Make sure you follow the warm up and cool down in this video. Stretching helps with mobility, reduces soreness and leaves you feeling good.
Please share this video with someone you know that could benefit from this workout. Muscle strength is so important for quality of life!

  1. "What dumbbell weight should a beginner start with? If I start with 2 lbs dumbbells, will that be enough to maintain or build muscle and prevent muscle loss, especially for older adults?"

  2. Hello, Lauren: I've been a fan for years. I am very very very old and I have been told to not lift weights over my head. Would you please consider adding alternate moves to your weight training videos? Instead of lifting the weights over the head, maybe an inset showing lifting weights no higher than the shoulder. When we get very old, we lose height and lifting weights over the head may exacerbate that. I believe it can also cause lumbar strain and disc problems. Thank you so much for the many hours of healthy exercise you have given me.

  3. love this training! i come back to it often and today i also increased my weights up to 20 kg, not sure how much is this in pounds. Really feeling the glutes and inner thighs working too, when i use more weight! TY!

  4. Another great 30-minute workout! I am recovering from quad tendon surgery, and at six weeks, can now do Lauren’s all-standing workouts. Although I can’t yet fully bend my right knee, I could do almost everything.in this workout. The workouts are consistently accessible, have good variety and pace, and always get the heart-rate going. Lauren is pleasant to listen to, clearly demonstrates proper technique, and oh so nicely pushes you to stay with her! I’m really enjoying trying her many workouts, and can say they are keeping me sane during my slow recovery. Thanks so much Lauren!

  5. I went on holiday for 10 days, and when I came back, I didn't feel myself as I had missed doing my workouts with Lauren. So I started again on Monday, so I have done 4 days and every workout is fantastic. I feel great. I'm ready to start my day, so now it's time to get ready for work. Thank you, Lauren.I would especially like to do some leg workouts if you could send me a link for leg workouts , thank you so much ❤ 🙏🏾

  6. I tried this one with 8’s (but had to modify on the knee raises/shoulders and the goal posts). I always appreciate the challenge you offer without it feeling impossible or hurtful! Question: I think I remember you sharing in a video/Q & A that you try to do push ups every day – do you do them even on strength days (say, after this workout)? I’d like to be able to do 5-10 real pushups but have to do them on my knees right now. Thank you, Lauren!

  7. I'm 43 and I had two open heart surgeries and I lost about 80 pounds using glp drug i found you and you seem perfect to help me get my strength and muscle back in order.
