Things I’m doing to lose weight just over 1 week postpartum: 1

Things I’m doing to lose weight just over 1 week postpartum:

1. Nothing 🙂‍↔️

Our bodies go through so much between pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery. The last thing we need is to add the unnecessary pressure to get back to a certain weight.

Yes, I am excited to get back to my training because I enjoy it, I love feeling/looking strong, I love to compete, and it is great for my mental health, but I’m not rushing my body to “bounce back”.

A woman’s body needs nourishment, extra calories, and as much sleep as possible during the postpartum stage, especially if you’re nursing! Now is not the time for a calorie deficit.

While some people say “the fat melts right off when you breastfeed” – that’s not always true, in fact you might hold on to extra weight because your body needs it. It’s important not to compare to others, and don’t overthink the comments or unsolicited advice.

Not only is labor and delivery a major traumatic event mentally and physically, it causes a huge hormonal drop shortly after. Your body needs love, patience, rest, and fuel. It took nearly a year to grow a tiny human and an additional organ, you’re not meant to lose the weight overnight.

Exercises I AM doing for my mind and body during this time are light stretches, and diaphragmatic breathing. I aim for 3-5 mins 2-3 times a day, but I am not strict about it. Just fitting them in when it feels good. This is for strength and recovery, not weight loss.

There’s a lot of pressure to look a certain way after you’ve had a baby, and while I’m looking forward to rebuilding strength, I’m not worried about what anyone thinks of my body after all the hard work it’s done in this past year.

Do I feel uncomfortable in my body at times? Yes. This feels very different and our bodies change so fast throughout pregnancy and delivery. But this is a temporary stage, not forever. When I feel uncomfortable I shift my focus to what I am appreciative of my body doing.

The newborn stage flies by so fast, and I’m just enjoying it while we’re here. If you’re in the same boat I hope you can enjoy it too.

Your strength and energy will return.

  1. Love this I think we need to normalize having a little weight after birth. You just created a whole human and went through a very stressful and whole body traumatic experience to bring the child into the world.
