Have you been told that losing weight is simply about “eating less and moving
more”? For decades, the “Calories In, Calories Out” model has been the gold
standard for weight loss. But what if it is completely wrong?
In this Masterclass, I break down the real reason you can’t lose weight:
Hormones. We dive deep into the science of obesity and explore why calorie
counting fails 99% of the time, as proven by massive studies like the Women’s
Health Initiative.
Weight gain is not a character flaw or a lack of willpower—it is a hormonal
imbalance. We will discuss exactly how hormones like Insulin, Cortisol, Thyroid,
and Testosterone control your body fat, and more importantly, how you can fix it.
In this video, you will learn:
● Why the ‘Eat Less, Move More’ advice is scientifically flawed.
● How hormones dictate whether your body stores or burns fat.
● The truth about weight-loss drugs like Ozempic (GLP-1).
● Why the 1977 dietary guidelines triggered the obesity epidemic.
● ✅ The ultimate, natural solution to lower insulin and lose weight
effortlessly.

What happens if you have a thyroidectomy? How do you not gain weight? Had a total thyroidectomy and gained 30 lbs. I do OMAD. It’s not making sense and doctors keep telling me to go on a diet. 🤦🏽♀️
Finally, someone gets it. It’s not calories that make you fat or that do anything. It’s what you eat that has the calories👍🏼
But many people are also forgetting that high body fat = unstable hormones and huge appetite.
So body fat still has to go first.
🎉🎉🎉
Is this why I always gain weight during breastfeeding and lose it after stopping?
Thank you for this video, Dr. Fung. Do you recommend a 60+ yr. old woman to take a testosterone and estrogen supplement? If so, which ones do you recommend?
Thank you so mucj Dr. Fung, I started intermittent and water fasting couple of days ago and it has been the game changer. God bless u.
Great video, very interesting and learning 😍😍😍
What about the Look AHEAD trail? 🤔
Reducing water to rice ratio (~3/4cup to 1cup rice) makes the rice more aldente and harder to break down lowering the glycemic index.
Not true on nicotine. I've smoked for 43 years and it has never made me thin. I've always been average until menopause kicked in. I still smoke, but I've gained weight.
When I eat right, exercise regularly and fast periodically I lose weight and feel happier.
And the most frustrating thing about it: Doctors will not test you on these hormonal markers! HgbA1C is crap exam. We need to check the insulin levels
Dr Fung is amazing! He can explain complex topics in simple terms . Awesome!
12:50 The root cause of the obesity epidemic.
I love this guy, he does'nt change his mind every other day, or talk out the side of his neck with useless B.S.
This isn't a video, this is a gold mine 🪙
Question: why, when i stick a stick in my mouth, is it satiating? I first figured it out when i started eating suckers. That just eating the sucker and leaving the stick in my mouth is surprisingly satiaing. So then i got a bunch of coffee stirrers off of amazon and i just stick one in my mouth instead of a snack. Oddly, this helps. Why? I know some 2 year old little boys will take this in a perverted direction, but i am asking seriously. Is it tricking my body to thinking I'm eating?
All these diets – carnivore, vegan, vegetarian, "sugar diet", fasting, eating once a day (OMAD)… have one in common – insulin low most of the day.
My last visit to my new VA doctor she told me to “ear less, move more”… funny thing is she never ask me anything about my diet. Not when I ate. Not what I eat. NOTHING!
She simply saw an old fat guy and assumed I ate 6 meals a day at McDonald’s.
The reality is I only eat one meal a day. It’s one pound of meat, usually ribeye and 4 – 6 eggs…. less than 2,000 calories. Does she want me to only eat every other day and only eat 1,000 calories…? 🤔
This while telling me that my fasting insulin level I was asking for didn’t matter because I’m not diabetic so it’s not a useful lab test and couldn’t be ordered under the VA policy.
Awesome video
You're the best in my book – thank you!
Independent of will power, there are no obese clients in a POW camp
A low carb dietitian seen on YouTube low carb Sydney advised more food. I have gained weight 😢 plus it cost a lot of money for that advice.
Insulin matters for regulating fat storage and fat mobilisation, but fasting works for fat loss largely because it creates an environment where stored fat can be mobilised while also making a calorie deficit much easier to achieve….therefore its still largely down to calories (energy) although its not a reliable focus as energy output can change from day to day.
All these new weight loss drugs are made of venom and have severe side effects ☠️☠️☠️
Greg Doucette needs to watch this
Gregg doucette needs to watch this video 1 million times since all he ever says in his fat loss videos are "calories in calories out" BS
On my 41st hour now towards a 72-hour fast. First time I went beyond 20 hours, I think. Gone from 214 lbs to 210 this morning. Probably mostly due to losing water weight but I've never hit 210 on the scale for many years now.
Dr fung why do people say if eat 1000 kacl then you not lose weight your starving your body if hang on to the weight you got eat 2000 kcals if not to do with kcals im so lost with all the different information .
0:25 NO. It is definitely false. Fat is NOT a store a food "energy". It is a store of mass. Thats why your calorie tracking is nonsense.
👍🙏 Thank you Doctor, may God bless you abundantly. You gave great information to humanity. Thank you very much
This is rubbish
You body turns every single thing you eat into sugar it can use as fuel
Calorie deficit = weight loss
I always learn something from you!
Thank you.
Hormones definitely play a big role, but putting all the causality on them sends the wrong signals. You do have to take in the calories to gain weight. It's true that some people can eat heaps without gaining any weight, but the opposite is very unlikely.
Dr. Mike is right: you are shady as hell.
Right, calories are not everything. First calories on food is not even close to be accurate, also it's impossible to know how much energy you burn per day. Calories can have a huge impact on muscle mass, hormones, gender, age, metabolism, stress, sleep and lifestyle
