The truth about weight loss, muscle, and metabolism is that your scale is lying to you. Discover why losing weight could actually destroy your health if you make this one huge mistake!
The number on your scale tells you almost nothing about what is actually happening inside your body. You can lose weight while becoming less healthy—or stay the exact same weight while dramatically improving your metabolism, reducing your risk of disease, and adding functional years to your life. When you fall for the trap of rapid crash dieting, you are often just burning through water and muscle, slowing down your metabolism and guaranteeing that the weight will come back as fat.
In this episode, we dive into the dangerous difference between healthy muscle and toxic visceral belly fat. Muscle isn’t just for athletes; it acts as a metabolic “sugar sponge” that protects you from insulin resistance and aging. Conversely, visceral fat acts like an immune organ gone rogue, pumping out inflammation and driving chronic disease. I also break down the five crucial health markers I track instead of body weight—including a simple waist measurement you can do at home today, and the real reason you should be checking your fasting insulin years before a diabetes diagnosis.
The goal isn’t simply to lose weight; it’s to build a healthier, more resilient metabolism. Later in the episode, I share a clip from Dr. Gabrielle Lyon where we discuss why muscle is the ultimate “organ of longevity” and how resistance training combined with the right protein intake can completely transform your future. The healthiest body isn’t always the lightest one—it’s the one functioning exactly the way it was designed to!

😆 🤣 😂 so we need a todaly different SCALE for that😊 !!!
Mark, tell me what chocolate do you eat? I’m hearing there is lead in our chocolate. Is this true? What about cacao Nibs?
Anecdotally: Since I've starting incorporating more beta glucan foods into my diet, I am singing more. Can you make your microbiome happy?
Yep, ketoed myself to skinniest and was anxious and chronically feeling knock out energy wise ❤ I am following what you have covered here! Thanks for confirming it!
I pretty much ignore the scale if I’m being consistent with all things healthy.
This is the message Keller wants readers to hear—that weight loss follows metabolic health, not the other way around. He shows how cravings, energy, and metabolism are all connected to daily inputs. Stop Feeding Disease gives you a clear framework to support your metabolism by changing what you repeatedly put on your plate.
Keller would agree completely—metabolic health is the real goal, not weight loss. In Stop Feeding Disease, he argues that we've been trained to chase the scale while ignoring the inflammation and dysfunction beneath it. He offers a practical way of eating that supports metabolic health without needing to follow a 5-step protocol
Its pity it's on in usnit in Europe. Maybe you know some online this function health in Belgium Nederland or Deutschland?
A freeing rerame
Cool
You can get the plan
was obsessed with weight loss and my metabolism was wrecked 😩 I couldn't lose anything and felt so broken. I thought I was doing everything right. Then a friend told me about the Menopause Transition Playbook written by (Lisa.Grant). It's about metabolic healing not just weight—28 lbs dropped, my metabolism recovered, and my health markers improved. This book shifted my entire focus honestly.
Eye-opening insights from Dr. Hyman! Focusing on metabolic health and muscle over just the scale is a game-changer. Adding simple on-screen text overlays for the 5 key metrics would make this video even more engaging for viewers.

The waist measurement staying steady while the scale barely moves is such a freeing reframe.
It is definitely hard to take Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, seriously, with all the tats, a doctor should know that that is not healthy, ink is not healthy, not the picture of Health. Yes, it’s my opinion, but that’s how I see it.
I have been lifting for over 40 years. My weight has always been ‘above the expected BMI’. However, my blood numbers have always been between great and very good. I have had several injuries during the years and was always able to bounce back relatively well. Eat well, sleep well, exercise regularly and avoid excessive stress. Add a decent social life to that and it is a hell lot more important than any scale.
About the waist, hard for post menopausal women. Younger girls may have a tiny waist and be totally inflamed due to stress and back diet. How do we account for menopause waist?
I’m a doctor, and True Health Made Simple by Alex Richardson offers a perspective on health that I find genuinely valuable. It’s a book that deserves attention.
The new goal…lol !!!
These guys will drive you insane and rob you of your time!!!
I’m a doctor, and True Health Made Simple by Alex Richardson is one of the exceptional books that can truly transform someone’s approach to health. Nothing else compares.
So so so important 👏👏👏
After years of letting the scale ruin my mood, hearing that your waist can drop even when the number won't budge finally clicked for me, I'm down a few kg with way more energy and meal plan from dietornia has similar swaps that actually keep me full.
Why the background music?
I started using Function Health in 2023. This blood work analysis saved my life!
Grazie Dottore ❤❤
I worked with an ER doc who would say.. oh he has a case of the dwindles 😂😂. Definitely a thing!
I keep reminding myself this as I am the heaviest I’ve ever been, but I also lift, take creatine, sleep, eat, do zone 2-4 cardio, yoga and meditate, more than I ever have.
If, your bones get stronger they get heavier. So,does muscle.
Very useful information, I always tell my mother that she must move, walk, swim and eat more protein
I’m a doctor, and this video reminded me so much of True Health Made Simple by Alex Richardson. It’s a book I genuinely think many of my patients would benefit from reading.
I love this! I don't think we should throw out the scale entirely, it can still be a helpful data point alongside other measurements to help us understand whether our habits are moving us in the right direction. But health is so much bigger than a number on the scale.
After many years of working with clients, I've also noticed there's often an emotional component. When someone feels "emotionally heavy" or is carrying unresolved emotional burdens, that weight can sometimes manifest physically as well. Interestingly, the clients who chose to work on those deeper layers, through therapy, counseling, healing attachment wounds, or developing greater emotional resilience, often seemed to have an easier time on their overall health journey. They weren't just becoming lighter physically; they were becoming lighter emotionally too.
Obviously, everyone's experience is different, and this is just an observation from my years of coaching, but I've always found that connection between emotional healing and physical health absolutely fascinating.
I am pure muscle,I get horrible energy drain when I don’t eat, weird but as a body builder you have to eat at lot
1. Waist
2. Strength
3. BP
4. Lab work (ApoB)
5. Energy

Key Points to Remember After You Watch The Video. (Thank Me Later):
1. Don't trust your scale because it only measures how hard gravity pulls on you and cannot tell the difference between fat and muscle (0:00–1:24).
2. Rapid weight loss often comes from losing water and healthy muscle, which slows down your metabolism and makes you store more fat later (1:57–2:39).
3. Muscle is a vital organ that acts like a sugar sponge to help keep your blood sugar healthy and protect you from getting sick (2:44–3:42).
4. Starting in your 30s and 40s you naturally lose muscle, so strength training is necessary medicine to stay strong and independent as you age (3:43–4:07).
5. The dangerous fat is the hidden visceral fat wrapped around your organs that causes inflammation, rather than the fat you can pinch (4:08–5:15).
6. You can be thin on the outside but still have a fatty liver and health issues inside if you don't have enough muscle (5:16–5:51).
7. Measure your waist instead of your weight because a smaller waist usually means you are trading bad belly fat for healthy muscle (5:52–7:23).
8. High insulin levels can build up for years silently before a diabetes diagnosis, so check your fasting insulin to catch problems early (8:27–10:41).
9. Monitor your five key health metrics: waist size, strength, blood pressure, blood work including insulin, and your daily energy levels (10:42–14:14).
10. Building muscle involves eating enough protein and doing regular resistance training to keep your body healthy and functioning well for a long time (15:11–19:11).

Lot of good information thank you. Also Dr. Gundry says leaky gut can affect your ability to absorb nutrients. So if your 5 year old needs 5g protein. He has no leaky gut so maximum absorption and I bet a healthy intestinal flora balance.
