Gout Diet: Foods to Avoid and Foods to Eat

What should you eat — and avoid — if you have gout? In this video, double board-certified rheumatologist Dr. Diana Girnita walks through the gout diet in practical terms: the foods most likely to trigger an attack, the foods that help lower uric acid, and how to build an eating pattern you can actually stick to.

Diet alone won’t cure gout, but the wrong foods can absolutely trigger a flare — and the right ones support your treatment. Dr. Girnita gives you a rheumatologist’s advice on the worst offenders, the best choices, and the practical swaps that make a gout-friendly diet sustainable.

QUESTIONS THIS VIDEO ANSWERS:

❓ What foods should you avoid with gout? → High-purine foods such as organ meats, certain seafood, and red meat, plus beer, spirits, and sugary drinks made with high-fructose corn syrup.

❓ What foods help lower uric acid? → Cherries, low-fat dairy, coffee, vitamin C-rich foods, vegetables, whole grains, and plenty of water.

❓ Can you drink alcohol with gout? → Beer and spirits raise uric acid and are common flare triggers; limiting or avoiding them is one of the most effective dietary changes.

❓ Does diet replace gout medication? → No — diet lowers your risk of flares, but most people also need uric-acid-lowering therapy to reach target levels.

  1. Thank you for informative video. It would be useful to explain why uric acid causes a problem in some people, why is cannot be excreted etc. What foods support kidney function to help excrete uric acid? What foods help restore proper kidney function?

  2. Carnivore diets with high fat and protein or vegetarian diets with very low fat both seem to work! Mixing them together seems to be the problem. Ancestry may be a key here? I’ve noticed many folks with north European origins do well on carnivore, while Mediterranean folks can enjoy pastas and breads without much meat and maintain good health. I envy southern Europeans! 😅

  3. foods that trigger my gout are, oats, lentils ,beans, asparagus, spinach, mushrooms, artichoke, meat, fish, seafood, meat broths. I am fine if i avoid these.

  4. Thank you for your dedication. May I ask you please, what is the most accurate system of home monitoring uric acid levels, in your expert experience? Thank you again.

  5. For me.. no matter how I avoided high-purine foods, I always get flare-ups few days before my monthly period. I even drink cherries-turmeric supplements but all in vain. Any advice..

  6. Thank you very much, This was helpful. I grew up with crazy stomach acid, mainly in the mornings and grew up eating a lot of stuff with hotsauce, I love it.
My issues the past few years though is breathing problems, feeling like there’s pressure in my diaphragm.

I wonder if I have damaged my esophagus, but I’m not sure. I hope I can reverse these issues with eating healthy and cutting out red meat, liquor, etc.

  7. Hi doctor, I'm struggling with gout. Do you think fruit can cause gout attacks? Do you think raw honey from a local farm can cause it? I stopped eating red meat everyday. I am taking desiccated organ meat supplements from heart and soil. Do you think those are causing gout?

  8. useful video…natural herbal formulation of Dashmularisht by Planet Ayurveda is an excellent Ayurvedic herbal formulation that is very helpful in Gout management and other body conditions.
