15 Healthiest Foods I Eat Every Week as a Doctor

What are the healthiest foods to eat for longevity, metabolic health, and disease prevention? In this video, I break down the 15 healthiest foods I eat every week as a doctor, based on nearly a decade working in emergency medicine and the strongest available research on nutrition, ageing, cardiovascular disease, and long-term health.

After years treating heart attacks, strokes, type 2 diabetes, and preventable chronic disease, I’ve seen first hand how diet shapes how we age — not through supplements or superfoods, but through boring, repeatable, single-ingredient foods eaten consistently over decades. This video explains why these foods matter, how they work in the body, and how they reduce long-term risk.

I’m Dr Alex, a UK Emergency Medicine doctor, and this channel focuses on evidence-based longevity, metabolic health, and disease prevention — the advice most doctors don’t have time to explain in clinic. If your goal is to live longer, stay independent, and avoid the diseases I see every day in A&E, this video will give you a practical framework that actually sticks.

I also reveal one of the most harmful everyday foods that quietly makes up a huge proportion of modern diets — and why its cumulative effects matter more than people realise.

It's called The Long Game, and it's an extension of everything I do here on the channel. Every morning I'll send you something short, whether that's a thought I've had that day, a tip you can put into practice, a piece of research I found interesting, or something I've learned from years of seeing people at their worst in A&E.

Most take between thirty seconds and a couple of minutes to read, so it fits around a normal morning, certainly shorter than my videos anyway…

I've called it The Long Game because that's what all of this is. There are no shortcuts and no quick fixes in anything I teach. It's small things done consistently over many years, and that's what genuinely changes your health in the end.

It's free, and you can sign up here: https://www.dralexnewsletter.com

This is brand new, and so the first few emails may end up in your spam, as with all new email newsletters, but hopefully this will soon sort itself out….

Let me know what you think!

    Best wishes,

  2. Great video.. I wonder if you can address the topic of herbicides on kale, blueberries etc. How do you balance the benefits of the food versus the long term chemical load if we eat a lot of these food. Thks

  3. Real Live Sauerkraut is hard to find in the shops it is mostly pasteurised. However, it is very easy and cheap to make I add carrot and fennel seeds it tastes amazing and last for weeks in the fridge once fermented. Mackerel is a good substitute for salmon and in many respects better and cheaper especially when it comes to farmed salmon.

  4. Who eats white bread anymore? There are lots of good whole grain and seed breads out there. Delicious! White bread sticks to the top of your mouth! And it’s tasteless. Just sayin’. I guess sourdough is good for you if it’s the real thing but it’s hard to find.
Also what about dried apricots? High in potassium! And watermelon and cantaloupe?

  5. If your looking at your phone while walking it is not a very healthy thing to do especially while walking in nature as the walk is not just about moving your limbs it’s about the whole experience smelling the fresh air appreciating nature i tell my daughter this all the time

  6. Can you please do a video explaining “glycation”. As I’ve heard that glycation is something to do with the aging process, the reason why this has a context regarding food is because I’ve also been told that if you overcook food it can add to the glycation process?

  7. Hello Doc, from India. Can you pls do a list of food for Indians/South Asian considering you have these ethnic backgrounds in the UK, as well as many of your subs may be from India/South Asia. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

  8. Love your channel and I’m a converter. However my nan died 88 , all she ate was white bread , potatoes and meat . no fruits , . My dad eats all wrong another white bread with every thing , biscuits chocolate , he is 90 .

  9. A beetroot a day keeps the Dr away! And I love my nut butters. I would add canned sardines in spring water to that list. Chicken will keep the protein allowance up as would Greek yoghurt so add that to the cottage cheese (low fat or not I'm not sure). P.S. Organic cold pressed Rapeseed oil has a better Omega fat profile as well as half the satfat than Olive (which has more polyphenols and antioxidants) so combine over a salad or soak the wholemeal toast with them.

  10. That's my new diet worked out: Walnuts and dark chocolate!

I have to smile when people tell me that nuts can go off. My problem is making them last until tomorrow!
