If your barbell row isn’t building your back the way it should, it’s not because the exercise doesn’t work but it’s because your form is off.
The barbell row is one of the best back exercises you can do for building size, strength, and overall posterior chain development. But most people completely butcher it without even realizing it.
Instead of training the lats, they end up:
– Rounding their upper back (thoracic spine)
– Letting their lower back take over
– Using momentum to yank the weight up
– Pulling the bar to the wrong position
And when that happens, you’re not just missing out on gains; you’re increasing your risk of injury.
If you want to build a bigger back, stronger lats, and better pulling strength, you need to fix your barbell row technique.
The key comes down to control and positioning.
Start by setting a strong, stable torso. Your spine should stay neutral throughout the entire movement. No excessive rounding, no jerking the weight up. From there, focus on pulling the bar with intent, driving your elbows back and keeping tension on the lats.
Most importantly, row the bar to the right spot. If you’re pulling too high, you’re shifting the emphasis away from the lats and onto other muscles. Dial this in, and you’ll immediately feel the difference.
When done correctly, the barbell row becomes one of the most effective back exercises for building muscle, improving posture, and developing real strength that carries over to other lifts like deadlifts and pull-ups.
When done incorrectly, it becomes a fast track to stalled progress and potential lower back issues.
Fix your form. Control every rep. Train your back the way it’s meant to be trained.

I'm going to stop doing it, it fucked up my lower back once again, I'm not suit for that or for dead lifts
Ripped Di maria 😭🤣
So at the end of the short when he goes over lower back position, what does he mean by "round out"? What is the proper position for the lower back? It's not clear from the video imo
Jokes on you, I do it for the upper back
God bless ypu all jesus loves you guys!!!!
Your lower back wasn't even rounding in the "wrong" way.
Barbell rows are NOT for lats, yeah you can target the lats with a row but the row is made specifically to thicken the upper/mid back, if you can pulldown the stack with perfect form, you will have MASSIVE lats, keep it simple guys
What if I pull to my chest and belly at the same time to grow both??

Is it necessary to touch your belly button with the barbell in order to get the full benefit of the exercise?
I've been doing bent over rows for years. I do them completely bent forward with the curvature of my back straight with my butt out. Over the decades, I still have no lower back problems like tye guys I've known who perform them upright like this.
Until my kneecap chips off on the eccentric portion lol
i allways do them for upper back, for lats you have better options like db rows and pullups
Yeh but what if u want to hit the upper back,,, its all about the low back these days,,, what can i do for upper back.
Crazy how many of you guys are saying “this isnt the best exercise for the lats”. Unreal. Look at ALL the golden era and later bodybuilders who had some of the greatest backs of all time. Whats the common theme? They all did barbell rows.
I would like to see what some of your backs look like since there are so many “better” ways to target the lats. You know a single arm, chest supported cable row on an incline bench is not in the same class as a barbell row?
Bent over barbell rows are always in my routine, I love this exercise. I do it simply the way it is the most natural for me, I bend over in about 35-45 degree, I pull the bar to my belly, with a slightly wider than shoulder width pronated grip (basically I grab the bar outside my thighs), and in the negative part I stay close to my thighs with the bar, I don't let it swing forward. But the thing is, I feel my lats AND my rhomboids and traps this way.
Stop telling me how to live my life!
Great teacher 🏋🏻♀️
I'm still out here tryna figure out the form on a row. Ain't never been able to target my lats.
I’ve been doing this for decades, don’t tell me how to do it…said the gym fool. Thanks for not only the hows but the whys.
Wow! He really has our back.
I do heavy pull-ups for lats and heavy rows for traps and upper back.
Shut up will you?
Great call, thanks coach.
Getting the correct lumbar position (ie not Rounding the lower back) is a tough one for me
Right now because I’m working through a chronic anterior tilt (lordosis) that I think is related to stress related psoas tightness and years of improper deep breathing patterns. My default position is incorrect, in other words. Focusing on maintaining non-painful tension in the low lats with a lighter load and diaphragm breathing correctly seems like the way to go. Going to try this next pull day

Would a lifting belt help?
How advanced would you say the bent over barbell row is? I have been lifting for years, but this is one I have always struggled with
