First, let’s talk about what keto is. The ketogenic diet puts you into a state called ketosis. Ketosis is when your body switches from using sugar as fuel to using ketones as fuel. To do this, you have to lower your intake of carbs and sugars. This includes grains, starches, sugary drinks, bread, pasta, candy, and fruits (except some berries).
You also want to limit how often you eat. Every time you eat, you trigger insulin. Insulin stops fat burning and triggers fat storage. Our goal is to lower your insulin levels. The best way to stop triggering insulin spikes is to eat less frequently. This doesn’t mean you have to eat less food (or lower your calories)—it just means no snacking in between meals and only consuming food 1-2 times a day.
On the healthy keto diet, there is one exception to the no-carb rule. You can have as many low-carb vegetables as you want—just avoid starchy vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and corn. You want to have 7-10 cups of vegetables every day.
After lowering your carbohydrates, you want to consume a moderate amount of protein. 3-8 oz of protein per meal. You should always consume meats with fat on them. Never go for lean or low-fat options. You can consume meat, fish, chicken, seafood, eggs (with the yolk), cheese, and nuts.
Once you’ve dialed in your protein, you want to focus on consuming healthy fats. Fats will help you stay full and satisfied. Healthy fats include avocado, butter, olive oil, coconut oil, and animal fats. Avoid soy oil, corn oil, and canola oil.
Once you’ve got the hang of keto, you should add in intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is simply cutting back on your meals and allowing your body more time to recover from insulin. Here are three tips for intermittent fasting:
1. Only eat when you’re hungry
2. Skip breakfast
3. Stop snacking

What a nice collection of recipes! Even pecan pie, I think that's doable. Thanks Dr.Berg!
I start eating at 11 and next meal at about 15:00 and I stop eating at 19:00 is this pattern ok??? Oh and I work out in the morning at about 9:30 for an hour
Love from pakistan
@10:30 I’ve read that women in particular shouldn’t fast in the morning but instead in the evenings (after 4-5pm) for this exact reason. Women need to lower/balance our cortisol upon rising. I personally intermittent fasted in the morning for a few years, and I felt worse. A little breakfast is my preference. Although so is eating in the evening. 🤣
If anyone has further thoughts about this I would love to hear!
I lost 70 lbs putting me at 230 and I’ve ridden right at 230 for the last few months. Entering a new cycle. My goal is right at 200. (I’m a 6’1” firefighter)
Avocado oil is a definite yes
No! stop! I am already getting anxious. No fruit? Why go on living?
Measuring food in cups is absolutely insane to me. Grams grams grams.
But I wanna eat some fn fruit bra
Keto kicks calorie restriction's
a$$. Cravings are a lot harder to give in to, you don't hit plateau, and you avoid blood sugar spikes. I wish I chose a better season to get through keto flu than summer, but once you get to the other side of keto flu, it is worth it.
Thank you so much Dr burg
So if I'm starting keto and want to eat venison, I should cook it (and maybe add some) in real butter?
Could I still do this if I got the gastric bypass surgery
My first mistake was overeating, I have now gone on to intermittent fasting which has made a big difference. Two meals a day, 1st after 10am and last before 6pm. I've found the RANGE of food I can eat is limited, I eat a lot of meat and eggs and always keep carb intake less than 30g per day. Main vegetables I eat is Broccolli, Cauliflower and Avocado, I don't eat any fruit. After the initial 'transition' and keto 'flu' I am now feeling much better and so far so good.
I've learned so much from Dr Berg. Your an amazing teacher.
Ideas for that morning coffee make at home? I can’t afford a fancy barista machine. And I hate instant coffee. What butter tastes best? Or least awful? Maybe MCT oil might taste better…?
How do you manage staying on keto with a family?
I wish I could eat more veggies. Fiber and sibo are not friends 😁
Dr Stacy Sims recommends that women eat something within 30 minutes of waking. I do better with a light dinner or skipping dinner.
I’ve been eating omad and as I leave in the morning and am out all day, I’ve been having my meal around 7-8am…as I like to prepare a hot meal with salad at home, not convenient at all to have it later in the day. What would you say to this routine please? I’ve also begun alternating and having omad, next day fasting then omad again…so faring for almost 48 hrs

Hello, I have been on a diet since mid April. I think I know my weight at that time….. end of June – first week in July I had blood work done —- (very basic – GP wants nothing to do with insulin nor to ask me questions or get info…. ). I have lost 20 pounds, went down a size before scales showed anything, been measuring myself — but abdomen is not going down by much. Questions: where do I go from here – this all started by years of stress / cortisol. I have been writing down all I have eaten and drank since April as well as writing down measurements. But my weight has not moved for a month. What can I do? how can I track visceral fat, fatty liver, kidney, gut….when GP is not interested in any of this. Since April I have had zero processed foods – apart from my one cheat – Irish cheddar . Zero sugars, zero dairy apart from greek yoghurt. ZERO oils apart from ex. virgin olive oil (first pressed). I have tried to add protein – eggs, yoghurt . I have had a lot of salmon (wild) but am taking a break as had for too many days…. I have followed mostly you with 2 others….WHAT to do for next stage – and to re start losing. I am still fasting. I am sleeping better – still waking up, but not taking as long to get back to sleep.
I am correct weight. Am i going to lose weight?
I can’t believe you would recommend peanut butter with its aflatoxins!
This guy has absolutely no idea what he is talking about 😂 didn’t even mention beef
7 cups of vegetables. Cmon now. You’d be eating every 3 hours.
Dr Berg, is buckwheat, quinoa, and chia allowed!!??
Hey @Drberg what about full fat greek yogurt? I like to add protein powder to it thats low carb with frozen strawberries.
apparently cold boiled before potatoes are not bad at all they are making the starch sugars insuline resistant
What about beans for protien??
Lowkey tho diet?
What do you do about medications to be taken after food in the morning?
I’m gonna start keto on August 1st and see how it goes. I have health anxiety and a panic disorder tied to bodily sensations. I heard about the keto flu, you might be weaker and sluggish, your heart rate may go up and feel dizzy a bit so I’m scared I’ll get an episode 😅 but I wanted to try it for so long! I’m 27y.o, 171cm, 61kg and my goal is 55kg. I know I’ll be terrified about hypoglycaemia (i don’t have diabetes, just mental issues), so I hope I’m gonna be okay. I’m a shift worker with doing afternoons and nights so I hope the intermittent fasting thing is suited for shift workers too! Anyway, I’ll let you know how it goes! I’ll do it exactly as this doctor says.
I was a successful Realtor and then developed seizures out of no where one day.
My WHOLE life changed.
Its been almost two years and i still have seizures multiples times a week.
Each day I take Levetiracetam (Keppra) 500MG, Phenytoin (Dilantin) 100MG, and vitamins.
I notice my seizures can get worse around my menstrual cycle.
I want a chance at having my life back.
Im going to try the Keto diet.
I really dont know what Im doing and going strictly off YouTube and peoples comments of their experience.
I am tired of feeling anxious about seizures, crying and not being able to live my life.
I really hope i am given a chance at life without medications, tons of doctor appointments, and feeling hopeless😢.
Thank you for the advice.
