Don’t Normalize Abuse, affairs and cheating!
Today, I want to talk about something that deeply affected me emotionally.
Recently, I came across a discussion on Zee Tamil’s Tamizha Tamizha, hosted by Aavudaiyappan. The topic was about women who leave abusive relationships versus women who believe they should adjust and stay, no matter what happens.
I couldn’t bring myself to watch the entire episode because some of the discussions were deeply triggering.
One woman shared that she discovered her husband’s affairs just two or three months after their marriage. Another woman responded by saying that affairs are normal and that women should adjust, even comparing it to Lord Murugan having two wives. When another woman spoke about being physically abused by her husband, the response was that we only know one side of the story.
When someone has survived abuse and finds the courage to share their experience, they deserve compassion, support, and a safe space to speak—not judgment, pressure, or excuses for the person who hurt them. Sometimes, a simple hug or a few comforting words can mean so much.
Abuse should never be normalised in the name of marriage, culture, religion, or adjustment. Nobody should be pressured to stay in a relationship that makes them feel unsafe.
Patriarchy is not upheld by men alone. When women who have been conditioned by patriarchal beliefs defend infidelity, excuse abuse, or pressure other women to tolerate mistreatment, they too become part of the system that perpetuates patriarchy.
Supporting women means listening to them, taking their pain seriously, and respecting their right to make decisions about their own lives.
