Today we’re going to talk about fasting and belly fat. If you have the correct pattern of intermittent fasting, you can tap into your visceral (belly) fat.

A recent study done on mice indicated that intermittent fasting could slow down weight loss and create a resistance to losing weight.

This conflicts with other studies that show that intermittent fasting can help with weight loss. One study indicates that a person can lose their visceral fat by 4-7% by doing one meal a day.

When we have conflicting information, it’s time to dig deeper. With the first study, they did every other day fasting. This is where you would fast for one day, go back to your regular eating plan the next day, then fast again the day after that, and so on. They were also not doing the keto diet when they ate their meals.

This is a lot different than what I talk about, where you fast for a period of hours, then go on keto, and then fast for a period of hours, and so on. The key is staying on keto.

Two types of fasting that will slow your weight loss:
1. Every other day fasting
2. The 5:2 fasting pattern (5 days you eat what you want and for 2 days you eat 500 calories)

If you go on and off keto, it can cause the body to adapt and protect its fuel source, which is stored as body fat. If you want to correct your metabolism and target belly fat, the best way to do it is with a combination of keto and intermittent fasting.

  1. Such results pay homage to the manufactured food industry. I have lost 10kg (22 pounds) in about 6 weeks by simply eating once a day, beef steak cooked rare, 2 eggs, and a palm-sized piece each of broccoli and cauliflower, smothered in salted dairy butter. That's it, no big secret.

  2. Sorry, kid, but I'm post menopausal, I am a vegetarian, and I started alternate day fasting about 3 months ago. I am now 18 pounds down from what I was. So you can lose weight without being "keto". In fact, losing weight more rapidly is supposed to be bad for your health, so why would you think it was a good idea?

  3. Dr Berg,

I have been doing Keto and intermittent fasting for months now and have lost a ton of weight but I have plateaued. I still need to lose about 20 lbs to be at my goal weight but this is stubborn fat and I can’t seem to break through. I have been a diligent faster and the only cheat days I’ve had have been very few and only when I have been in a situation where Keto was next to impossible and I was out with clients. Suggestions?

  4. I have a 12 on the index scale out of 25 for visceral fat. NOTHING is working.
    I exercise SO much
    iF of all sorts
Prolonged fasting – water 3 days
    Keto
    Ketovore
    CARNIVORE 0 carbs

    Nothing.. nothing helps.

    Anyone have any suggestions ?

(I have tons of muscle mass and my BMI is 27, 144 at 5'1 but my dexa scan is starting super high visceral)

  5. 99% of studies on mice do not translate to humans. We are not mice. Studies on mice are useful to get an idea what may work and how certain things work biochemically, but without human studies all recommendations based on mice studies are junk.

  6. I have a hard belly and I'm also a diabetic but I don't have much fat around my belly I'm practically a thin guy 6 ft 185 lb. Is this the reason why my belly is protruding outwards? I just can't seem to get rid of it

  7. Subhan Allah this is how our Prophet ﷺ used to keep and taught us to do. He fasted Mondays and Thursdays and also recommend us to do so and he ﷺ informed us that the best fasting is alternative day fasting like Prophet Dawood(David)a.s. He also fasted and adviced us to fast on three days of every month. We as muslims( most of them) have failed to imply this sunnah (his lifestyle) and that's why we are in trouble right now. Thank you so much Dr.Eric berg, u have helped me to treat myself from past 7-8 yrs . May God bless you. Aameen

  8. Hello Dr Berg. I am a 60 year old woman, height 157 cm. my current weight is appx 160Ibs with a weight line of 102cm. I would like to lose my extra ibs, especially the fats in my tummy. My question is should i do a water fast before i start fasting, if yes, what is the ideal number of days for the water fast. Water fasting during these period means that i dont not consume any food or drinks except just drinking water, right?

  9. I have heard that fasting especially intermittent fasting for women is different than it is for men. Isn’t it unsafe to intermittent fast or fast for extended periods of time daily for a woman?

  10. in order to overcome your body's reaction to conserve fat during fasting is to do low intensity long distance (3miles+) walking every day, including the days you fast. This forces the body to dip into reserves.

  11. Hello Dr. Berg! I recently watched your video and in one of your videos you mentioned that we should substitute our carbs with vegetables. I live in the sub-continent and we eat bread every morning and rice every afternoon as that is what’s available for us. Do you have any advice for me?

  12. I gained 10 lbs when I moved to Italy 7 months ago. Started intermittent fasting and cut out carbs, for the most part. I've lost the 10 pounds. However, my stomach still feels and looks bloated. What's going on? There are so many confusing and contradictory information out there regarding nutrition and health. Even "experts" can't seem to agree on what's the best diet for heal thing lien living.
